War Requiem

Composed in 1962 after most of his full-length operas, Britten's 'War Requiem' brought to bear his considerable power in deployment of chorus and orchestra in service of his lifelong anti-war sentiment. Astonishingly but appropriately, he created a vocal text combining the ancient Catholic "Missa pro defunctis," in the original Latin, with the urgent and beautiful English poetry of Wilfred Owen, who was killed in World War I at age 25. The combination is also stunning musically, as dynamically conducted by Kurt Masur: orchestra, chamber orchestra (conducted by Samuel Wong), choir, boys' choir, and baritone, tenor and soprano soloists.The choirs and soprano provide the Latin link to the eternal, the male soloists the voices of the contemporary poet and, through him, his comrades-in-arms. The paramilitary use of brass and drums evokes Britten's earlier 'Billy Budd.' With perhaps inevitable emotional references to Peter Pears, Britten's favored singer and companion, Hadley and Hampson vocalize the poems variously and engagingly as spirited battlefield camaraderie, fatigued depression, or rage. Vaness can be as imperious as an angry Hampson or as celestial as the boys' choir. The sigh of "Amen" with which this testament concludes leaves the listener with a mighty warning.

Casualties of War

Casualties of War was based on a New Yorker article by Daniel Lang. This, in turn, was inspired by a true incident which illustrated the dehumanizing aspects of the Vietnam experience. Michael J. Fox plays Eriksson, a member of an American squadron stationed in the deepest jungles of Southeast Asia. Sean Penn co-stars as Meserve, the squadron sergeant, who vows revenge after his best friend is killed. He orders his men to invade a village and "requisition" a young Vietnamese girl (Thuy Thu Lee), who is repeatedly tied, gagged and gang-raped. The horrified Eriksson refuses to participate in these atrocities, and he does his best to console the girl and to attempt to free her. Before this can happen, however, Meserve orders another man to kill the girl. Once he returns to camp, Eriksson attempts to file a report on the tragedy and to bring Meserve and the others to justice, but he is stonewalled by the brass and threatened with death by his fellow soldiers. Eventually Meserve and his co-conspirators are jailed for their crimes, but Eriksson can never forget his "compliance" in the incident by failing to save the girl.
