Shoulder Surgery, how to control pain at 2 in the morning?
So I had Shoulder surgery on 2/17, no scope, he cut me open to repair HAGL lesion and other previous injuries. Needless to say it is pretty painful. Anyways the question I have is related to pain management. I am on percoset, and during the day it is quite manageable. But it seems anywhere from 2 to 4:00 in the morning there is nothing I am able to do to sleep.
I have tried taking 2 tabs of percoset to no avail and last night I tried 800 mg of Motrin with similar results. I plan on talking to my doctor, so please don't tell me to do that. What I am wondering is if anybody who has had painful surgery (not necessarily shoulder) has had similar experiences and what worked for them.
I am athletic and very active. 6'5" 220 lbs. Don't drink or smoke.
You seem to be doing everything that you possibly can do for the pain at night. I know how you feel. I didn't have surgery but, I have RSD which is nerve damage that resulted from being hit by a van walking out of a store. I would wake up every morning around 2:00 a.m Never failed, always 2:00 a.m. I would try taking double the amount of pain medication thinking that the pain would stay gone for longer periods of time and I could sleep more but, no such luck. I even went to the Dr. and nothing came of it except for physical therapy, pain management clinic where I had nerve block injections and then cortisone shots. Maybe you could talk to them about going and getting the nerve blocks done? They are called stellar ganglion blocks. They give you a mild sedative and then a needle with some sort of blocking medication is inserted into the nerve in your neck and you are free from pain . (depending on your body and pain type) I had 6 of them done which was one a week. It did help so maybe that is something that you can discuss with your dr. It is better than having to take a whole bunch of pain pills and risk getting addicted to them. Good luck to you. I hope that your pain starts to fade away soon so you can get some sleep and get back to your normal life.
