Acrylic Furniture by Charles Hollis Jones - We Have The Hots for Hollis
When American artist and furniture designer Charles Hollis Jones began working with acrylic and Lucite back in the 1960s, these materials had never before been taken seriously as fodder for fine art and furniture. But the pioneer designer had something up his sleeve. He was just 16 in 1961 when he founded CHJ Designs and began selling his work to department stores. Two years later, he moved to Los Angeles from his native Indiana and began creating bespoke furniture in just these materials for famous LA showrooms such as Hudson-Rissman. Soon enough he began to attract attention from stars like Johnny Carson, Frank Sinatra, and Lucille Ball, who all commissioned custom pieces for their homes. In the ‘70s, Hollis Jones launched the Edison Lamp, the steel and Lucite lantern housing a simple Edison bulb that won him the California Design 11 Competition. He went on to create hundreds of designs in acrylic, from table lighters and candlesticks to four-poster beds and spiral staircases.

Now 65 years old, Hollis Jones is still living and designing in LA and this year marks the 50th anniversary of his design studio. His acrylic and metal coffee tables, side tables, chairs, and light fixtures have become iconic to such an extent that, if you don't know his name, you probably still recognize his work. Last month, at Chryssanthou Art & Design in West Hollywood, California, Hollis Jones had a retrospective and also introduced his new "O" line series in shapes inspired by the circle, whose geometric perfection asserts itself in motifs sculpted into polished nickel handles and runners. Among the collection's highlights, the "O" Rocker is constructed of transparent light reflecting acrylic sandwiched between polished nickel frames. Hollis Jones actually embedded a Presidential Seal in one of the rockers and gifted it to President Obama. Is Jones experiencing a renaissance? With the promotion of the new series at Chryssanthou and the Obama stunt, he certainly is positioning himself for attention.

And you can't fight him on it. Especially in the dead of summer heat, Hollis Jones's work is refreshingly light and airy, with forms that seem to float delicately between gleaming silver runners and prismatic edges. Offered by VandM.com dealer Material Environment in LA, the Ziggurat side table is an original production from the ‘70s and features one of the designer's signature zigzag profiles.

Also in LA, dealer Cain Modern brings us several key HJ pieces. A trio of custom Waterfall barstools date to 1970 and each swivel 360 degrees with comfortable foot rests. The dealer recommends reupholstering, but otherwise the 35 ½-inch-high, 16-inch-wide, and 21-inch-deep stools are in Excellent Condition. From the designer's Metric collection, a dining table in Lucite and brass sports a glass rectangular top that Cain Modern is happy to switch out for a larger surface if desired. Characteristic of the Metric series, the metal and acrylic are attached without revealing any hardware, a signature Hollis Jones detail. Two storage devices find shape in an acrylic magazine rack with chrome fittings and a sleek vintage shelf of glued, one-inch-thick Lucite panels.

Looking harried but still dashing, like one of Saul Bellow's larger-than-life, take-on-the-world characters, Horace "Woody" Brock excuses himself to take a phone call. "That's the problem with your generation," he tells the caller (presumably not his mother). "You're lazy, you leave everything to the last minute."

Crosley Candlestick Phone-Brushed Brass $79 The Candlestick phone, also known as the 'upright', initially became popular during the early 1900's before the introduction of the one-piece handset. The first Candlestick phones were introduced when the magneto system was in use, which meant that the phone was connected to a large wooden box called a "subset" containing a battery, bell, and crank. But oh have we come a long way. From its bell-shaped mouthpiece to its cloth covered receiver cord, this telephone replica recalls a vintage instrument from the 1900's. But a closer look reveals some modern technology including a decorative dial that functions as a push button for tone/pulse operation as well as a center medallion that serves as a redial button. Decorating With Your Existing Home Decor
Candle Holders are probably the quickest and most inexpensive way to breathe new life into existing home decor. Many different types can be used to decorate with ease. You can use glass, metal, plastic, or resin.
One of the most beautiful affordable and pleasing forms of decor is in the form of wrought iron candle holders. Not only do they protect your furniture from hot wax, they also come in various shapes and sizes. Some of the designs you can work with in wrought iron are: birdcage, bow, swirling, grape, star, vine, ornate, acorn and many more.
The "pillar", is one of the oldest types of candle holders. It is fashioned after the tall brass candlesticks and adds a touch of elegance to any room in the house. Pillar's are usually round and make wonderful accents for the living room or even the bathroom.
Glass candle holders add a classy yet functional touch to any decor. You can even use a Tiffany glass style to impart warmth and passion into your home.
If you like the look of several candles grouped together, the Candlebra may work best for you. They can add colors as well as texture to your wall or room. Another way to incorporate candlebras into your decor is by displaying them on the mantle of your fireplace. People often use candles to decorate and create a romantic setting or to establish a certain feel to a room, such as the feel of an old castle or even a big country house. Candlebras are also used in restaurants and party halls. They are used to provide elegant lighting for events and special parties such as weddings and anniversaries.
If you don't mind the expense, you can decorate your home using hand blown glass candle holders. These are simply amazing works of art and can be designed to your preference. You may pick the thickness and design as these are hand-crafted items. You can also use them for a special gift for loved ones. That special someone will feel elated that you chose something hand-made instead of store bought.
