Finally, winter hardy tree Rose for the Northern Gardener - 'Northern Encore'

Tree roses are among the plants more dramatic than it can add to your garden. In the South, is often used to line walkways, in containers on patios or as an accent. Unfortunately, Northern gardeners have been unable to enjoy these beautiful roses for more than a year, since they are not reliably resistant to cold, without much fuss - that is, until now. This spring, Bailey Nurseries of Minnesota (makers of Endless Summer Hydrangea) is the introduction of the first truly winter hardy tree rose - "the Encore North. "

'Northern Encore' has been developed by the award-winning program, rose from Bailey Nurseries breeding 'especially for the northern gardener. It's tough, rugged, reliable tip, even in zone 4 - a true low-maintenance tree rose. Unlike other tree roses which actually are 2 or 3 different roses grafted together (the root, stem and top), "North Encore" is the same Hardy rose from top to bottom.

'North Encore 'has single pink blooms 2 inches, combined with disease resistance, foliage light green. The combined effect gives the impression fresh apple flowers. Blooms come in groups continuously from late spring through fall. 'Northern Encore' matures at 5-6 feet, possibly more, but it is easy to prune to desired height. Your roses will work well as a vertical accent or planted in the landscape surrounded by low-growing perennial species or bedding plants - or a large container on a terrace or patio.

Planting and Care

  • For best results, plant in spring.
  • Performs best in an area with full sun to light shade and well drained.
  • Fertilize monthly with Rose-Tone from mid-March to mid-August.
  • Performs well in zones 4-7.

Northern light in Iceland S

In my capacity as Director of Operations for the UK One Limited world tours, each time we add a new destination, the questions overflow in. Having recently returned from Iceland people wanted to know about my experience of the Northern Lights, so here it is ...

I'm not really a person and people tend to opt for private visits if I can get away with it. With customers in mind, I would like to experience the kind of things that are going to experience when on holiday and not only that a group trip is much cheaper, especially in Iceland.

I took a tour of Iceland in the winter months in order to be able to wonderful to see the Northern Lights along with other things that can only be observed in the second half of the year. Of course, the weather is very unpredictable at this time of year the chances of getting a clear cloudless sky for a long period of time is something that must be taken into account when making a night out like this. One thing is definite and that is there is never a certainty that the trip will take place. If the weather is not suitable then the travel company will ring your hotel to let you know that travel is off, offering the following night tour or a full refund.

The night I was waiting to see the light was so unpredictable and I was waiting for a call to say that the trip would be canceled. To my surprise I was informed that he would be picked up from my hotel at 20:30, and so began my adventure extraordinary. I picked my hotel more near 20:45 and is transported to the bus that was to be my refuge from the bitter cold winds, rain and blizzards for the next hours. Once the bus was filled they were driven out of the bright lights of Reykjavik deep into the Icelandic countryside. At different intervals of the tour guide left the bus to check the conditions and began to feel that the short video on the Northern Lights we had all been shown as close as I was going to see them. For security reasons we had to find a suitable place to park the bus in the dark so that we can all go down without being hit.

Based on a call from the headquarters of forecasting clear skies all fifty passengers got off the bus and slid his way into position off the ice to get a good view of the aurora borealis in the sky clear starlight. When I looked up all I could see were the clouds that were heading towards us at a speed surprising. We were informed that this stop will be more than 30 minutes and then we would proceed. The clouds were upon us before 30 minutes was up so all we again have the bus under the instruction of a guide as he knew for a fact that could locate the lights.

Handle later when the guide said the driver could see something beginning to explode in front of us. Once again we got off the bus to check the conditions and we were a little ground beyond the deposit safely to land the 50 visitors who are expecting a baby. So we all out again and the guide pointed to us what he thought was the beginning of an outbreak. The area is not illuminated by the northern lights, but with about 40 cameras flashing against what looked like a cloud to me. Hey, I'm not an expert and I was sure the guide knew what he was talking and not ridicule among my peers of applicants saw the light "Thing" in the distance. Well, I was right after all, was only a cloud and was back on the bus again.

Then he had given up hope of seeing the lights are not headlights of a passing car and decided to stay on the bus during the next three landings. From my window, all I could see was snow, and it hit and slid out of it. At 1130 the driver and the guide finally admitted defeat and began the long journey back to Reykjavik and I must admit that made me feel sorry for them as they had done much to teach us something. The guide had muttered through his microphone that these things he used to happen and, of course, was beyond his control.

I could see the lights of Reykjavik is approaching in the distance and my hopes of seeing Northern Lights disappeared into the bitter night. "Stop," said the guide for the driver, "something is about to happen!" Of course it is, I thought feeling cold and tired talking about the boy who cried wolf. I just want to go back to my hotel room now. The bus quickly emptied once again the people who were determined to see something as I stubbornly stayed in my seat. "Come on" said the driver motioned to me. But I wanted my seat warm and enjoyable. Looking out at all the other "idiots" standing in the cold I saw the familiar waves of sound that seemed to flare as if they were directly on our bus. I got off the bus and was treated with a most fantastic display of the most beautiful lights I had ever seen. Only after midnight I was in my snowy environment to see this natural phenomenon and I was grateful for the persistence of tourist guides. Suddenly, our long search had been rewarded and returned to England feel honored to have seen another of the wonderful gifts of nature.

Mattie Gokey has a word for everything. She collects words, stores them up as a way of fending off the hard truths of her life, the truths that she can't write down in stories. The fresh pain of her mother's death. The burden of raising her sisters while her father struggles over his brokeback farm. The mad welter of feelings Mattie has for handsome but dull Royal Loomis, who says he wants to marry her. And the secret dreams that keep her going--visions of finishing high school, going to college in New York City, becoming a writer.Yet when the drowned body of a young woman turns up at the hotel where Mattie works, all her words are useless. But in the dead woman's letters, Mattie again finds her voice, and a determination to live her own life.Set in 1906 against the backdrop of the murder that inspired Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy, this coming-of-age novel effortlessly weaves romance, history, and a murder mystery into something moving, and real, and wholly original.
